Permanent residence in 2026: what changed and what is still only a proposal

On 12 July 2026 permanent residence was abolished for asylum-related permits and their family members; they now get five-year temporary permits. Existing PUT holders are not affected.

Labour migrants, researchers, PhD students and their families can still be granted PUT. From 1 October 2026 maintenance requirements for family immigration are tightened, also at extension.

A Swedish + civics knowledge test for PUT was proposed in SOU 2023:25 targeting July 2027 — but there is no government bill yet. What applies today are the citizenship requirements.

Have PUT and an expiring card? You do not apply for a new permit — book photo and fingerprints via Min sida at the earliest three months before the card expires.
