The citizenship civics test is live: how it works
60 questions, 90 minutes, Swedish only. Who must sit it, how to book, what it costs.
Since 15 August 2026 most people applying for Swedish citizenship must show basic knowledge of Swedish society. The usual route is the civics citizenship test run by the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR).
The test is digital, has about 60 multiple-choice questions with four options and lasts 90 minutes. It is only offered in Swedish. Migrationsverket decides whether you must take it — you cannot book on your own before that decision.
The requirement applies to applicants aged 16–67. Passing grades in certain courses (e.g. basic-level civics) can replace the test. The fee rises to 2 000 kr per sitting from 2027, so passing first time matters.
