Så sorterar du dina sopor

In Sweden it is important to sort your waste. It is not only good for the environment, it is also something every household is expected to do. Here is a simple guide. Food waste goes in the brown paper bag you get free from the municipality. You throw the bag in the brown bin. Food waste becomes biogas and fertiliser. Never put plastic bags in food waste. Packaging made of paper, plastic, glass and metal is taken to a recycling station. There are different containers there. Glass is sorted into coloured and clear. Rinse packaging so it does not smell. Since 2024 most properties must also have their own packaging collection near the home. Newspapers and advertising go in the container for recycled paper. Cardboard boxes should be flattened so they take up less space. Deposit (pant) is a smart system. On cans and PET bottles you pay one or two kronor extra when you buy the drink. You get the money back when you return the can in the deposit machine at the grocery store. Batteries, lamps and electronics are hazardous waste. You leave them in special cabinets or at the recycling centre. There you can also leave furniture, wood and garden waste. Bring ID, as some municipalities only accept waste from their own residents. Residual waste, i.e. what cannot be recycled, goes in an ordinary rubbish bag.
