Föräldraledighet i Sverige
Show translation
When you have a child in Sweden the parents are entitled to parental benefit from Försäkringskassan. In total parents get 480 days per child. If parents have joint custody they get 240 days each. 90 of the days are reserved for each parent and cannot be transferred to the other. The rest can be shared as you wish. For 390 of the days you receive compensation based on income, about 80 percent of salary up to a ceiling. For the last 90 days you get a lower, fixed amount per day. The days can be used until the child turns 12, but after the child turns four you can only save 96 days. You can take whole days, half days or even smaller parts. Many parents choose to be at home part-time when the child starts preschool. You must tell your employer at least two months before you want to take leave. The employer cannot say no, and you have the right to return to the same or a similar job. You apply on Försäkringskassan's website with BankID. It is important to apply on time, since you can only get compensation for 90 days back in time. In addition to parental benefit, the other parent is entitled to ten days' paid leave in connection with the birth.
